The real Ford Escort RS1600 was introduced in 1970 as the high-performance competition-focused version of the Mk1 Escort. Powered by the famous Cosworth-developed 1.6-litre BDA twin-cam 16-valve engine, it became an important homologation model for Ford’s motorsport programme. Lightweight, compact and highly tuneable, the RS1600 helped establish the Mk1 Escort as one of the most successful and recognisable rally cars of the 1970s.
